During sound therapy sessions, many people report feeling more relaxed and peaceful. Some describe a softening of physical or emotional pain, while others experience colours and shapes. At times, participants also report mental clarity, a sense of unity with the Whole, or a connection with the Divine.
These experiences may occur when the brain enters an altered state of consciousness (ASC), in which slower brainwave patterns, such as Theta (4–8 Hz) and Alpha (8–12 Hz), may become more prominent. Similar patterns are also associated with states of meditation, prayer and daydreaming.
This deeply relaxed state may be accompanied by a range of positive effects, such as lower blood pressure, reduced stress, relaxed muscles, improved mood, greater mental flexibility, enhanced imagination, clarity, inner peace, a more positive outlook on life, and a deeper appreciation of art and nature.
Sound is vibration and travels in the form of waves through air, solid materials and liquids. It surrounds the human body and, through the physical phenomena of resonance and entrainment, is believed to help bring the body’s frequencies into harmony with the new frequencies produced by musical instruments.
The dynamic, rhythmic sound of an instrument can influence the vibrations of our body, helping to restore balance within our system and promote a sense of calm.
The BAST method combines the therapeutic potential of sound with an exploration of how different events, habits, thoughts, emotions and beliefs affect us.
Through inner dialogue, we are guided towards recognition, taking responsibility and becoming aware of the changes we can make in our lives.
Research conducted by the BAST Academy has reported that the BAST sound therapy method is 16% more effective than conventional music, 6% more relaxing than other methods such as massage, and 64% more relaxing than general relaxation methods.
In the BAST method, specific playing techniques are used to activate the sound frequencies of Tibetan and crystal singing bowls, gongs, drums and various idiophonic percussion instruments, with the aim of facilitating an Altered State of Consciousness (ASC).
In this state, a range of potential benefits may be experienced on a physical, emotional and mental level.
These may include lower blood pressure, a calmer heart rate and breathing pattern, muscle relaxation, relief from arthritic or chronic pain, enhanced imagination, mental clarity, spiritual connection, a greater appreciation of life and art, and an increased sense of positive emotions.
Some sessions, such as Relaxation Sound Baths, Sound Baths with Reflection and Drum Journeys, focus on deep relaxation, healing, self-awareness and wellbeing on a physical, mental and emotional level.
Others, such as Rhythm of Life and Narrative Soundscapes, are experiential in nature and aim to encourage self-awareness, empowerment and creativity, restore a sense of flow in everyday life, and strengthen teamwork and social connection within a safe environment.
You do not need any musical knowledge or previous experience to participate in a sound therapy session.
There is no established research confirming sound therapy as a contraindication in itself. However, particularly in relation to Sound Baths, we recommend that women in their first trimester of pregnancy, people with a history of severe epileptic seizures, serious mental health conditions or metallic implants in their bodies consult their personal physician before attending a sound therapy session or Sound Bath.
You should bring a yoga mat, a light blanket, a bottle of water and a sleep mask. We also recommend wearing comfortable clothing.
For some sessions, some or all of these items may be provided by the venue, with appropriate attention to cleanliness and hygiene.
